Course Content

English

Learning and understanding of the English language is among the essential skills students need to achieve high results for their Year 6 SATS examination in order to best prepare them for Key Stage 3. It is important to establish a solid foundation in English, as the material in grammar and literature compound and become more complicated. We understand that not all students learn English the same, and this is precisely why we teach and assess student learning patterns to ensure they work towards improving with the core subject. Key topics that are taught within this course are as follows: sentence structure, Adjectives and verbs, Prefixes and Suffixes, Nouns, Synonyms, Antonyms, Shuffled sentences, compound words, Spelling, grammar and punctuation as well as comprehension skills.

Maths

Year 5 maths can be much harder, with your child needing to tackle new concepts like prime numbers or factors, with a greater emphasis on reasoning and problem-solving, important for success in maths and general life. This course will help your child to achieve this. Some of the key topics which will be studied are multiples and factors, positive and negative numbers, interpreting data, non-verbal reasoning, measuring angels, introducing volume, composites, division and remainders, and fractions etc.

Year 6 - SATs

Purpose

The purpose for our course is to assist students with their SATs preparations and to bridge gaps in learning that may require additional support than the time allocated at school or home. We understand the importance of SATs and are aware of the stress it can have on parents and children. The course is designed to academically support your child, boost their confidence and prepare for exams.

Aims and Outcomes

SATs are used to measure the child’s attainment and progress. Our SATs course has been devised to give Year 6 children the opportunity to address the most important areas that will be tested in Maths and English. We cover the majority components of both subjects which Year 6 students will face in their SATs. Our course also includes exam type questions and tutors demonstrate solutions and close gaps in learning. We will also include general guidance on the essential components of successful answers. All students take home any worksheets used during the lessons and supplementary work. This work will reinforce the content of the session and is reviewed weekly.

Course Content

English

For our Year 6 course, we help students to prepare for the subject by helping them to improve and development with the two elements which are reading and writing. The course provides learning for reading where students will learn and be able to respond to a range of texts. They will be able to show an understanding of ideas, themes, events and characters. Use of inference and deduction from texts, reference to text when explaining views. Locating and using ideas and information from the passage. Other aspects will include identifying characters, themes and key features to support answers as well as selecting sentences, phrases and relevant information to support views. Retrieval and collation of information from a range of sources.

For the writing aspect, students will be able to convey meaning in a range of forms for different readers as well as develop a varied and interesting style using characterisation, dialogue and description. Development and management of a theme or controlling idea. Use of a formal style. Development and sustenance of ideas. Adventurous choice of vocabulary and use of words for effect. Use of simple, compound and complex sentences to extend meaning. SPAG will be meticulously assessed and sessions will cover sentence punctuation including full stop, capitation, and question marks. Use of commas and apostrophes in sentences. Use of inverted commas and paragraphs in direct speech. Error correction for regular and complex polysyllabic words. Handwriting analysis targeting joined, clear and fluent style.

Other aspects of the English language students will be exposed to throughout the course include use and understanding of; Apostrophes, conjunctions, direct and indirect speech, colon, semi colons, comprehension, clauses, speech marks, homophones, active and passive, nouns, adjectives, tense and sentence moods. The last 4 weeks of the programme will consist of revision and exam preparation which will give the opportunity to students and tutors to review and revisit weaker areas which will give ample time to bridge gaps in learning.

Maths

We will focus on all topics including, Number and Algebra, Shape Space and Measures, as well as Data Handling . The course covers the fundamental aspects of each of these key attainment targets and the content has been thoroughly selected to develop and improve each student’s score in the SATs test. Below outlines the topics covered and areas that are taught throughout the course in order for our students to achieve their goals for the SATs.

Number and Algebra will consist of; use all four operations with decimals to two places - four rules of number (+ – x ¸) checking solutions using inverse operations. Fraction/percentage of quantity and measures. Proportions as simple fractions and percentage. Ratio and direct proportion to solve problems. Coordinates in all four quadrants. Use of involving one or two operations. Add, subtract and order negative numbers. Number patterns and relationships. Simple formulae.

Shape, Space and Measure will consist of, metric measure and imperial conversion. 2-D shapes. Reflecting shapes. Symmetries of all 2-D shapes. Perimeter and area. Construction and measurement of angles. Geometry rules of triangles.

Year 5 - 11+ Summer Courses

Purpose

For this course we dedicate 16 hours per week for 4 weeks during the summer prior to the exam itself. Students also have the opportunity to undertake mock exams during the course which allows the child to learn about the exam format, question and techniques required for the real day as well as gaining familiarity with the exam atmosphere. This also helps students familiarise themselves with the CEM 11+ format and enables children to conquer any exam fears and gain confidence.

Parents are advised that this course is a last resort and does not replace a full year course of the preparation or a full-time preparation course. However, it may be an option for those who have late it to late to dedicate extended time periods to prepare. This course also serves as a useful reinforcement programme for students who may have been completing tuition courses with another provider other than AEC, have done some preparation at home with their parents or are already students at AEC Tuition and wish to highlight and strengthen subject areas studied throughout the year.

Aims and Outcomes

Our intensive course usually takes place during the summer holidays and is 4 weeks long. The course is taught in small engaging groups and is designed to support and refine your child’s existing 11+ preparation whether at home or with a tutor.

For the child preparing at home this presents an opportunity to be taught material, they may have previously found difficult, from experienced tutors; furthermore, they can consolidate and revise the syllabus. It also provides an opportunity for those children who may be isolated in their 11+ journey to meet with peers, make friends and appreciate they are not alone. It also enables children to become aware of the level of competition amongst their peers as well as gain plenty of exam practice and grow more confident in areas of weakness for both subjects.

Course Content

Mathematics & Non-Verbal Reasoning

The 11+ Mathematics part of the course is comprised of all the topics related to the exam including non-verbal reasoning. As the children work through their course, they will be expected to complete examples and make notes while doing so. Children are expected to spend specific allocated time on each topic to help with practice of the real exam. For high achievers who complete their work quickly, we provide an extension section. Daily homework, daily verbal feedback and weekly progress reports are provided for each subject.

English & Verbal Reasoning

For English, we focus on all key areas of the exam such as synonyms, antonyms, shuffled sentences, odd word out, comprehension and skim reading techniques. Students are also exposed to more exam practice and time management is enforced for students to be become familiar with the style of exam expected. “Challenges” relating to the subjects above are also set on a weekly basis for students to extend their knowledge as well as bridge any gaps in learning. Daily homework, daily verbal feedback and weekly progress reports are provided for each subject.

11+ Exam Techniques

To hone a child’s examination techniques, we discuss with him or her the different aspects of preparing for the 11+. We also talk to parents so that they can help their children study by knowing what to work on, the timing of set questions etc. Not only are students taught exam techniques for both subjects, but the emphasis on time management is bolstered for children to understand the importance of completing questions under and time-controlled environment.

Students are also provided the opportunity to complete mock exams at the end of each week of the course. Each child will be seated in a real examination hall with other children just like the actual exam. They will be invigilated, timed and tested just like the real exam. This sort of practice not only helps perfect technique, but also helps children get used to the environment and boost their confidence, because the examination process will become familiar to them. We aim to provide superior quality to our clients and focus on preparing students as much as possible giving them real practice conditions and giving parents consistent feedback to keep them aware of their child’s strength and weaknesses.

Our paper is specifically designed for the Birmingham Region Grammar Schools. We will be providing a tailor-made paper that will prepare students for all CEM grammar school entry tests in Birmingham, Warwickshire and Walsall.
